Sketches Throughout The Years

Sometimes I think my best work are my sketches. They still retain the life and spontaneity of when that first idea came to my head. I don't sketch as much as I used to, which I think I should get back to, because I never know what I'll come up with on the fly. Anyways, here are some sketches over the year that I personally like.

Banner Girl Progression_01

This one is for my buddy Duong, who suggested that I do progress pics of my work. So here we go. This is the initial sketch, which I will often go back to because sketches carry a certain energy to them that is hard to hold on to as you progress through a piece. I find that a lot of your gut feelings are held in your initial sketch and should be built upon. I used reference for the pose, but tried to capture the essence of the pose without just copying it, which I tend to do sometimes. As my drawing style goes, it gets very chaotic and hard to clean up with so many lines. So I retraced the drawing in order to rework the piece. I got rid of the megaman boots and tried to draw feet like a real artist. Still working on that one... I saw these awesome shoes (yeah, girlfriend!) in a department store and thought the style would look cool on girl characters. I attempted some hands which I still find hard to draw after four years of art school.

At this point, I started thinking about suit design and color scheme. Tracing paper is awesome for this stuff because you can just throw something into the mix, tear it down, and try again.

Now the piece seems to have lost some of that energy from the initial sketch. Back to tracing.

I decided to push the arch in the lower back more to show off that booty. I simplified some of the features because the style of the face and the body just didn't fit. Okay, so now we're getting somewhere, but it's still missing something. Back to the sketch, and I notice that the sketch had this powerful back arch that was no longer in the drawing. Also, I started to skimp on the boobage along the way. Hey, I don't discriminate. I appreciate boobs of all different sizes, but something's gotta keep this girl weighed down. I jest...

Alright, so I trace again to finish off the details and finalize what I want. Then, one last final trace for the clean up.

Next time I'll post the coloring process. Hope you all enjoyed. 'Til next time, homies.

2011 EOD art exhibition

My illustration got selected for the 2011 Embracing Our Differences art exhibition, which I am pretty psyched about. It's not a big thing, but it's nice to win something.

New Banner!

I decided to redo my banner and finally get "site under construction" off of the title, which before, bothered my girlfriend to no end. Oops, still gotta change the actual site name...Sorry, babe. Anyway, I like how it turned out and it's a little different from previous projects in that there aren't only flat colors. That's because I don't know value after 4 years of art school. Go figure. I may post the progress pics lataz.

Pole Dancer Character Designs

These are character designs for an animation exercise that I will hopefully do in the future along with a sculpture. I had a lot of fun doing these and I feel that the photoshop designs were a success. Pat on the back for me. The other is done in acrylic.

Screenprinted T-Shirts

I printed these T's over a year ago. Wasn't too lucky in selling, but hey, at least I got a $500 screenprinting set up out of it that I can use whenever I want (I just don't...ever...). Somewhere I learned a valuable lesson out of this. When I find out what that is, it will be blogged.

Armored Core Artbook

I just got this awesome artbook from Animebooks.com. It has a bunch of drawings of robot designs from the Armored Core series. I am a huge fan of Japanese-style robots for their intricate designs and details. I can't even understand how they start to construct one of these things.

Valentines Card

This is a Valentines Day card I did for my girl. I found the chinese menu, used as packing material, in a box when I was working at AC Moore.

Ink Splatters

These were done in photoshop altering ink splatters. It's always fun to create something from random shapes.

Progress

I'm making progress on this piece however slow it is going. Had fun with some ink and tape, and whipped out me x-acto blade. Tedious, but worth it. On a side note, does anyone know why my blog thinks I live in California?

Robot Character Designs

Here are some character designs I had a lot of fun doing in pencil, pen, and markers. The scan quality is off because either I have a terrible scanner, or I'm just that inept with technology. I may try some others in Illustrator.

Traditional Piece

This is a work in progress. I've been trying to really push through my artwork and see it to the end. I used traditional medium on this one -- a rare occasion. Watercolor, colored pencils, marker, and my all-time favorite: the almighty ball-point pen.

The Office Sketches

I'm thinking about going the character/prop design route. I've always liked to play with style and design, but I guess I've shied away from that career because it's highly competitive and just about every nerd and their alter ego wants to do it. But you do what you love...or think you love.

I was watching The Office, one of my favorite shows for its great characters. Here are some sketches of them.

Me Blog

I set up this site more as a portfolio tool rather than a blog, but I figure, why the hell not do both? I'm a grown ass man, I do what I want! So, I decided to post my artwork (even the "unfinished" ones) to see my progress and share my art wit da intawebs. I hope you all enjoy, homies.

Oh, and uh...I realize the site looks a little feminine at the moment, but I'll add blood and skulls and stuff later...
